Wellspect takes Surity urine management into the US home as external collection moves beyond hospital use

Wellspect HealthCare, the continence-care subsidiary of Dentsply Sirona (NASDAQ: XRAY), has launched its Surity Urinary Management System for direct home purchase in the United States, completing a portfolio that connects a powered collection unit with female and male external catheters introduced earlier in 2026. The device uses continuous suction to move voided urine away from the body into a collection system, includes an on-demand Boost function when additional suction is required and incorporates carbon filtration intended to reduce odor during extended use. Wellspect is positioning the system particularly around overnight management, where repeated awakenings, absorbent-product changes and caregiver interventions can substantially disrupt sleep for people with severe incontinence and those caring for them.

The launch reflects a broader shift in urinary management away from treating the indwelling catheter as the default collection solution whenever a patient cannot toilet independently. External urine collectors do not enter the urethra or bladder, which eliminates some complications intrinsically associated with an indwelling device, although they create their own issues involving skin contact, leakage, fit and reliable urine capture. FDA device records classify Surity’s male external catheter under the powered, non-indwelling urine collector category and indicate that the product is exempt from premarket submission requirements, an important distinction from medical devices that reach market through a 510(k) clearance or PMA.

Why is overnight urinary incontinence a medical-device problem rather than simply a hygiene issue?

For a mobile person with occasional incontinence, absorbent pads or protective underwear may be manageable. The problem changes considerably for older adults, people with neurological disease, severe mobility limitations or patients who require caregiver assistance each time a product becomes wet. Repeated nighttime changes can fragment sleep for both patient and caregiver, while prolonged moisture against the skin can contribute to irritation and moisture-associated skin damage.

Nighttime toileting can also create fall risk when patients with poor balance or mobility attempt to reach a bathroom repeatedly. Wellspect designed Surity to operate quietly and continuously while the user sleeps, using external anatomy-specific collection interfaces rather than asking the patient to wake and transfer every time the bladder empties. The manufacturer describes one-touch controls and carbon filters as features intended to make prolonged use more manageable in the home environment.

The key difference from an absorbent product is active diversion. Rather than waiting for urine to be absorbed after contact with the skin, the system attempts to capture and move it away from the body immediately. Whether that translates into lower skin-complication rates or fewer caregiver interventions across large home populations will require real-world comparative evidence rather than assuming a mechanical difference automatically produces superior outcomes.

Why are external collection systems attracting attention alongside catheter reduction programmes?

Indwelling urinary catheters are indispensable in defined clinical circumstances, but unnecessary or prolonged use can increase the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infection and other complications. Hospitals have therefore spent years developing programmes to reduce catheter use when it is not clinically required.

External collection devices offer another option for patients who need urine management but do not necessarily need a tube placed inside the bladder. Published hospital evidence around female external urinary devices has reported changes in indwelling-catheter use and CAUTI trends after implementation, although results depend heavily on patient selection, staff training and device design. Wellspect cites this broader evidence base as part of the rationale for external management, but Surity’s new home system should not be claimed to prevent urinary infection without product-specific comparative clinical evidence.

The home setting also differs fundamentally from a hospital. Nurses can inspect fit, respond quickly to leakage and document fluid output, while people at home may depend on family caregivers or operate the system themselves. Ease of attachment, skin tolerance, tubing management, alarms, reservoir maintenance and cleaning therefore become central components of real-world performance.

How does the new collection unit complete Wellspect’s Surity model?

Wellspect introduced female and male Surity external catheters before launching the powered collection device, meaning the earlier products provided the patient interface without yet completing the company’s integrated home collection architecture. The August launch adds suction, urine transport and collection, turning the portfolio into a complete management system rather than a set of standalone external catheters.

The company says the new unit applies continuous but gentle suction and includes a Boost button for moments requiring greater collection support. Carbon filters are intended to address odor, while quiet operation is aimed at keeping the device suitable for bedroom use. It is already available for direct consumer purchase and Wellspect says it expects subsequent availability through healthcare institutions.

That direct-to-home model is commercially interesting because durable and disposable components create different revenue streams. A powered unit can establish the installed base, while repeated use of external catheter interfaces and other consumables generates recurring demand. For Dentsply Sirona, which is better known broadly for dental products, Wellspect provides exposure to a very different chronic-care device category built around long-term consumable utilization.

What will determine whether patients stay with an external collection system?

Reliability may matter more than technical novelty. A nighttime system that leaks even occasionally can undermine confidence quickly because patients and caregivers adopt it specifically to avoid wet bedding, clothing changes and sleep disruption. External interfaces also have to remain comfortable against delicate skin for extended periods while accommodating anatomical variation and movement.

The comparison set is broader than indwelling catheters. Surity competes with absorbent products, bed protection, bedside commodes, intermittent catheterization in certain clinical contexts and other powered external urine-management systems. Consumers and institutions will therefore evaluate not only whether the device collects urine but whether total daily cost, setup time, disposable consumption and caregiver workload justify changing an existing routine.

Home reimbursement could become another important variable. Direct purchase allows Wellspect to begin commercialization without waiting for every payer pathway to develop, but long-term adoption among high-need populations may depend on insurance or institutional purchasing rather than consumer cash spending alone.

Could the home become a larger market for devices first associated with acute care?

Surity fits a broader trend toward moving monitoring and supportive technologies out of hospitals as populations age and healthcare systems attempt to manage chronic needs at home. Urinary management is particularly suited to that transition because the underlying need often persists daily rather than occurring only during an acute medical episode.

The risk is assuming that every hospital technology can simply be repackaged for consumers. Home devices need simpler interfaces, quieter operation, intuitive troubleshooting and enough reliability that people without clinical training can use them safely for hours at a time. Wellspect’s design decisions around one-touch controls, odor reduction and overnight operation reflect that difference.

The commercial question now shifts from product availability to sustained use. Wellspect has completed the Surity hardware ecosystem in the United States, but the more valuable evidence will come from whether people use the system night after night, experience fewer disruptions and skin problems, and whether caregivers find the reduction in manual continence care significant enough to justify the recurring cost of external collection supplies.
